Dear Parents,
We are off and running in 1st grade. I am so pleased with how the children are settling in and at the quality of work I have seen so far. I truly appreciate your patience these first few weeks as we establish routines and expectations, for optimal learning to take place. Most importantly, the children are showing me what great citizens they will be, they get along very well , help with our classroom duties and are concerned about others.
We have enjoyed several stories of friendship, First Day Jitters, We Share Everything and Don't Spit on Your Shoes . We have also read the story of a little girl named Chrysanthemum, and did a writing activity with student names. I am already listening to the children read, and they are doing very well. We will be reading with many leveled readers, and doing phonetic word work to go along with our reading.
Hopefully you are reading the newsletters from Everyday Math, they explain all the interesting math investigations we are doing in the classroom. We are counting, working with pattern blocks, doing number line investigations., and will be playing some counting games with dice.
Science news: We will begin a new curriculum full of lots of investigations and experiments. If you find any interesting insects, plants or caterpillars in a field near your home, or any non -stinging creature we could study, send it in; clear plastic containers are the best.
Don’t be surprised if your child is adjusting slowly. First grade is a big change and we ALL get tired. I am praising them daily for their hard work and attention. We are trying to do many learning activities that involve movement. Homework will begin slowly and their classwork looks great. When homework begins, if your child is struggling to complete the homework, call me or send a note, I do not want a child to be overwhelmed, 5 to 7 minutes should be enough.
FYI I will send home book orders from scholastic regularly. They are optional but reasonably priced. If you want to order, send a check made out to the book club in the folders. I order often, so don’t worry about the due date. The orders come in within 3 weeks and our class receives free books as well. .... I will take care of getting the books, and give them to your child.
I am so grateful for all the extra supplies and tissues, many thanks. Finally, thank you for all the offers of willing volunteers.. I will start volunteers in October when we have settled in. I am very grateful. Your children are a delight; I can tell we will have an exciting year.
Fondly, Mrs. Sherman
