Fall is upon us and winter is knocking at the door with a cool wind. We are finishing our Science unit on seasonal patterns and will be moving on to space and to learning about the pilgrims and long ago.
Reading: I work with groups of children and with each child one on one as much as possible. Children read to themselves each day, research shows that the most time spent reading helps a child grow and improve their ability. I use a reading workshop model, based in research by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser, as well as Lucy Calkins where I teach a strategy, we model it together and the children practice it in their reading. In September thru December we will be working on picking just right books, continuing to build stamina, good reading habits, and Word Decoding,
Math: Our next chapter is finished, then we will move on to Number stories including parts and writing our own. We have been working on slates, in our new workbooks and doing some fun games on the computer.
Science: We will begin to study how scientists explore, study, wonder, discuss and think in our study of light. We will explore apples, plant Daffodils this fall and watch our Greenhouse. We are beginning to feed the birds and will watch them out our windows.
Social studies: We are learning about the economics of the apple orchard as well as the cycle of an apple.
Handwriting Children are practicing upper and lowercase letters spacing and letter formation; our curriculum is Zaner Blosser. Each child has a writing book which you will see intermittently and will go home at the end of the year.

In Phonics we are studying rhyming, letters and their sounds and spelling patterns. We will begin with the short a and a word families, at, ag, am, an.
